Meade led a Northern army of about 90,000 men to victory against General Robert E. Lee's Southern army of about 75,000,. Four months after the battle, visiting journalists reported that the Earth at Gettysgurg remained blood-soaked in places. It stopped the last attempt of confederate forces to invade the North. The battle of Gettysgurg had over 162,000 men in it.
