Mount Saint Helens by Avery and Shon

Do you know who Mount St. Helens is? Well, for starters it’s not a who it’s a what. Mt. St. Helens is located in Skaimiania County Washington. Mount St. Helens got the name from the British diplomat Lord Saint Helens. On May 18 at 8:32 Mt. St. Helens erupted. During the eruption part of the northwest face was blown off because of the amazing force. Mt. St. Helens is 8,364 feet high. It used to be 9,677 feet high, before the volcano erupted. The age of Mount St. Helens is 40,000 yrs old. Nearly 230 square miles was blown down and buried in the volcanic deposits. Fifty-seven people died because of the eruption and some people were buried in ash. Mount Saint Helens is probably the most destructive volcano in the U.S. history.

Yosemite National Park by MacKenzie and Danyelle

Here are some facts about Yosemite National Park; Yosemite is located in Tuolumne Mariposa, California. There are many animals dwelling in Yosemite. It is in east central California. Yosemite is home to many waterfalls, one of them is Yosemite falls. Yosemite is 761,266 acres or you could say it is 1,189 square miles of land. That’s big Isn’t it?


Yosemite contains thousands of lakes and ponds. It also contains 1,600 miles of streams. It takes 3.5 hours to drive to Yosemite from San Francisco. Yosemite is known for some of its great sceneries. The waterfalls are ice water, and the total drop is 2,425 feet down. Yosemite has more than 400 species of vertebrates.

Yosemite is one of the first wilderness parks in the U.S. Yosemite has an elevation range from 2,000 to 13,114 feet wide. Yosemite has many rules one of the rules is that you cannot feed the animals. These are some facts about Yosemite National Park.

Crazy Horse by Kendall and Madison

Did you know that Korzak Ziolkowski sculpted Crazy Horse Memorial? Well, he did. He worked on Crazy Horse all by himself. Korzak started the sculpture in 1948. After Ziolkowski died 7out of his 10 children along with his wife, Ruth Ziolkowski , still work on Crazy Horse today. Crazy Horse Memorial honors Chief Crazy Horse. The head of Crazy Horse including his hair could fit Mt.Rushmore on Crazy Horse Memorial. Just the head of the Crazy Horse Memorial is 87 feet tall. It  took more than 50 years to create the face. Crazy Horse Memorial is still being built today. When it is finished Crazy Horse will be the world’s largest sculpture. Crazy Horse is right now 641 feet long and 563 feet high. The carvers of the monument used explosive devices to shape the mountain. Crazy Horse will be sitting on a horse pointing to the west.

Golden Gate Bridge by Blake and Chasen

The Golden Gate Bridge was started on Jan.5, 1933.  The chief engineer was Joseph B. Strauss.
11 men were killed while building it. 10 were killed when a part of the bridge fell. The bridge has 4,200 foot long suspension spans. The bridge is 1,280 meters long!!! The Golden Gate Bridge is located in San Francisco, California. The real color of the bridge is duliur international orange. The suspension spans were a world record because they stood for 27 years. The steel used to make the bridge came from New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It was shipped through the Panama Canal. The Golden Gate Bridge got its name from the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean and they called it the Golden Gate. On October 17, 1989 162,414 vehicles crossed the bridge. That’s the most that’s ever crossed in one day. The bridge was first named Chrysopybe meaning golden gate. It’s an international symbol for California. The bridge was finished on May 27, 1937. Joseph B. Strauss built it so people could go from northern California cross the Pacific Ocean and end up in San Francisco.

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore is located in South Dakota. The four faces on Mount Rushmore are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt , and Abraham Lincoln. Thomas Jefferson, had to be blasted off of Washington’s right and rebuilt on his left. It took 400 men and women to build it. Two million tons of granite were blasted off of Mount Rushmore. Gutzon Borglum built Mount Rushmore and Doane Robinson thought of the idea.  They had to climb 700 stairs to get up to the top. It took 14 years to build Mount Rushmore. It is not yet finished because Gutzon Borglum died during construction. The Presidents were supposed to be carved to their waists.

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York. Liberty Island is a twelve acre island. The Statue of Liberty has seven thorns on her crown that stand for the seven oceans and the seven continents. It was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. On October 20,1886, Liberty Enlightening the World, was dedicated in New York City. In 1924 the Statue of Liberty became a national monument.

The Vietnam Wall Memorial

The Vietnam Wall Memorial is located in Washington D.C. and was built in 1989. The designer of the Vietnam Wall Memorial is Maya Yin Lin. The Vietnam Wall Memorial remembers the veterans who fought in the Vietnam War. There are 58,260 names on the Wall. When a diamond is beside the name it means their body was recovered. If a cross is beside their name it means they are missing in action.
